World Migratory Bird Day

Next Saturday, 10 May 2025

World Migratory Bird Day is observed on the second Saturday of May every year to symbolize the importance of migratory birds and the conservation of their habitats.

The global awareness campaign educates people about the threats faced by migratory birds that encourage the action to protect them.

Every year, it is a theme and the theme for 2025 is Shared Spaces: Building Bird-Friendly Cities and Communities.

This year’s theme highlights the need for harmony between people and birds by promoting urban environments that support their well-being.

Origins of World Migratory Bird Day

Established in 2006 by the United Nations Environment Programme or UNEP, World Migratory Bird Day is coordinated by the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals and the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds.

The initiative builds upon previous conservation efforts, including International Migratory Bird Day, which was launched in 1993 in the Americas.

The day aims to raise awareness about the ecological importance of migratory birds, their role in maintaining ecosystems, and the environmental challenges they face.

Over time, it has become a key event for bird conservation worldwide.

Significance of Migratory Birds

  • Migratory birds help control insect populations by feeding on pests.
  • They assist in plant reproduction by transferring pollen.
  • Birds that eat fruits help disperse seeds across vast areas.
  • Their presence in various habitats supports ecological balance.
  • They travel thousands of miles to breed, find food, or escape harsh weather.
  • Their migrations link ecosystems across continents.
  • Protecting them is a global responsibility.

Threats to Migratory Birds

  • Urbanization, deforestation, and agriculture reduce nesting and feeding areas.
  • Temperature shifts and weather changes disrupt migration and food sources.
  • Pesticides, plastics, and oil spills harm bird health and survival.
  • Hunting and poaching threaten populations through food, trade, or sport.
  • Collisions with buildings, power lines, and wind turbines cause fatalities.

How to Celebrate World Migratory Bird Day

Individuals and organizations worldwide celebrate and support bird conservation in various ways.

Birdwatching events provide an opportunity to join guided tours and observe migratory birds while learning about their behaviors and habitats.

Educational workshops, including talks, exhibitions, and school programs, help spread awareness about the challenges these birds face.

Tree planting initiatives contribute to habitat restoration by increasing native vegetation essential for birds’ survival.

Another impactful action is reducing light pollution by turning off unnecessary outdoor lights, preventing migratory birds from becoming disoriented.

Supporting conservation organizations through donations or volunteer work also plays a crucial role in protecting these species

Additionally, social media campaigns using hashtags like #WorldMigratoryBirdDay help raise awareness and encourage more people to join the cause.
