History of World Intellectual Property Day

The idea to have a special day to observe intellectual property was first proposed in September 1988.

The head of Algeria's National Institute for Industrial Property (INAPI) suggested having an International Intellectual Property Day at a meeting of the World Intellectual Property Organization.

They wanted to raise awareness about innovation and recognize the contributions of people who promote IP rights.

Amor Bouhnik, INAPI’s Director General wrote a letter to WIPO’s Director General later, on April 7, 1999.

The letter highlighted the need to have a day dedicated to IP and explained that it would spread awareness and highlight the importance of protecting intellectual property worldwide.

The Commissioner of China’s State Intellectual Property Office, Jiang Ying, sent another proposal to WIPO A few months later, on August 9, 1999.

China proposed celebrating World Intellectual Property Day on April 26, the anniversary of WIPO’s 30th founding year.

In October 1999, during WIPO’s 26th General Assembly, member countries officially approved the establishment of World Intellectual Property Day.

The first celebration took place in 2000, with 59 countries hosting events. Over the years, participation has grown significantly.

By 2005, 110 countries were involved, and by 2022, 189 member states had joined the campaign.

Today, World Intellectual Property Day is observed worldwide, helping to educate people about IP laws and encouraging creativity and innovation.
