On May 13, World Cocktail Day is observed, which honors the artistry, culture, and creativity of cocktails.
This day is celebrated as World Cocktail Day because the first definition of a cocktail known to mankind was first published in The Balance and Colombian Repository, a New York newspaper, on May 13, 1806.
A cocktail was described as “a stimulating liquor composed of spirits of any kind, water, bitters, and sugar” by Editor Harry Croswell.
This definition paved the way for modern cocktails, including classics such as the Old Fashioned.
The Museum of the American Cocktail started World Cocktail Day in 2006 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the first definition of "cocktail."
Since then, cocktails have evolved from basic mixed drinks to a form of art across the world, where today there are in-depth courses and studies dedicated to cocktails and the science behind them, such as mixology.
How to Celebrate
World Cocktail Day is your chance to explore the delectable and bright world of cocktails and let your creative juices flow.
It does not matter whether you are a mixologist, have some experience making cocktails, or are just thinking about getting into it.
You can start off by trying to make classic cocktails such as the margarita or bloody Mary or follow online recipes to make more creative drinks.
Chances are on this day, there will be several cocktail classes or workshops that you can attend to learn the artistry behind it.
Visit local bars or pubs to take advantage of offers, discounts, or special drinks that are made only for this day.
Host a gathering and invite your loved ones to enjoy special cocktails made by you or experiment with different drinks together. Do not forget to share your moments and creations on social media with the hashtags like #WorldCocktailDay2026 or #CocktailLovers
Although the celebration embraces alcoholic beverages, please remember to drink responsibly while honoring the tradition.
