St. Thomas Day or The Feast of St. Thomas the Apostle, is observed on July 3 to honor one of the twelve original disciples.

This day is especially important for Indian Christians as it is said, St. Thomas was the first to bring Christianity in India during the first century. Hence, it is also known as Indian Christians Day.

His legacy as a missionary, architect, and martyr continues to inspire millions worldwide.

Who Was St. Thomas the Apostle?

St. Thomas, also known as Didymus, is best remembered for his moment of doubt regarding Christ's Resurrection as when Jesus appeared to the disciples after rising from the dead, Thomas initially refused to believe until he saw and touched Jesus' wounds. Upon seeing Christ, he proclaimed, "My Lord and my God!" (John 20:28), affirming his faith.

After the Ascension of Jesus, Thomas traveled beyond the Roman Empire.

He worked on spreading the Gospel in the East, particularly in India, where he established Christian communities.

St. Thomas in India

As per traditions, St. Thomas came to India somewhere around 52 AD and landed on the Malabar Coast which is known as Kerala in the modern day and preached Good News converting several individuals into Christianity.

They formed the foundations of the St. Thomas Christians, which is one of the oldest Christian communities in the world.

St. Thomas was also popular for his architectural skills that led him to serve a local king.

But he was imprisoned for using his earnings to help the needy and his continued evangelization efforts caused unrest among the ruling class, ultimately leading to his martyrdom.

St. Thomas was martyred by a spear in Mylapore (modern-day Chennai, Tamil Nadu) around 72 AD. The manner of his death mirrors the wound Jesus received on the cross, symbolizing his unwavering faith. His tomb in Santhome Cathedral, Chennai, remains a revered pilgrimage site.

St. Thomas is also the Patron Saint of Architects due to his construction skills. Many churches, schools, and institutions dedicated to him emphasize the role of faith as a foundation for life, much like an architect carefully builds a structure.

How St. Thomas Day Is Celebrated

Christian communities particularly in India and Catholic churches across the world hosts special masses and prayer service to honor St. Thomas.

Many believers visit Santhome Basilica in Chennai, where St. Thomas is believed to be buried. Pilgrims also travel to Kerala, where he first preached.

In regions with a strong St. Thomas Christian presence, celebrations include traditional songs, dances, and processions, reflecting the rich Christian heritage he left behind.

Inspired by St. Thomas' generosity, many churches, and organizations use this day to help the poor, following his example.
