National Tequila Day is celebrated every year on July 24th. As the name suggests, it is a day to honor one of the most beautiful alcoholic drinks and a base for making the most popular cocktails- Tequila
The day is dedicated to honoring the uniqueness of tequila and its cultural significance.
It is not an official holiday but for Tequila lovers, it is just another excuse to savor the beauty of tequila.
Who Started National Tequila Day
The origin of the National Tequila Day is still vague but although the drink originated in Mexico, the day is believed to be American.
Tequila goes back to the Aztec civilization which was popular for fermenting the sap of agave plants to make a drink known as pulque. When Spanish conquerors arrived in Mexico in the 16th century, they started to distill a spirit from the agave plant. This, later on, became the popular drink it is known today, Tequila.
National Tequila Day seems to be a fairly recent one that supposedly started in the late 1990s to the early 2000s. According to some reports, the Tequila Regulatory Council which is a Mexican government agency created on this day.
On this day people come together to celebrate the Mexican spirit of the blue agave plant.

The options to celebrate tequila day is endless.
- You can create your favorite cocktail or drink it straight. One of the most popular tequila drinks is Margarita which is made by mixing tequila, triple sec, and lime juice.
- Many distilleries in Mexico (and even some in the US!) offer tours that delve into the history and production process of tequila. Learn how the blue agave plant is transformed into this fiery spirit, and maybe even enjoy a tasting amidst the agave fields.
- Gather your friends for a fun and educational evening. Come up with your own tequila-themed trivia questions or find some online. Make it a potluck party where everyone brings a dish inspired by Mexican cuisine.
- Many bars and restaurants also run special offers or events on this day so make sure to keep an eye out!

- Tequila is made from Weber blue agave plant which looks quite similar to aloe vera.
- Believe it or not, during the great flu of 1918, the cure of the day was a shot of tequila with a lime and salt chaser! While doctors don't prescribe it anymore, some folks still swear by it to soothe a sore throat, clear congestion, and maybe even lull you to sleep.
- Yes, tequilas are usually consumed neat but it differs in the US and Mexico. Shots of tequila with lime and salt are mostly preferred in the US whereas people in Mexico like to sip their tequila neat instead of taking a shot.
- Tequila can aid digestion! Some believe a small amount of tequila after a meal can help break down food.
