The History Behind These Sweet Treats

Also known as Schnecken (a German word that literally translates to "snails" in English), sticky buns resemble a coiled snail shell.

The origin of this sweet treat can be traced back to the Middle Ages in Europe. At the time, sweet rolls made from sweet dough, nuts, honey, and fruits were quite common. As the years passed by, these sweet treats took various forms and shapes according to the ever-evolving preferences as well as ingredients.

When the Europeans arrived in North America, they brought this recipe with them. This started becoming famous in the 18th century, especially in the German and Dutch communities that lived there. Over time, sticky buns have evolved with different recipes and techniques used everywhere.

How are Sticky Buns Made

Ingredients Required

  • Yeast
  • All-purpose flour
  • Buttermilk
  • 2 eggs
  • Sugar
  • Butter
  • Baking Powder
  • Salt
  • Ground Cinnamon
  • Brown sugar
  • Raisins
  • Chopped pecans

Process

  • In a bowl, add some warm water and yeast. Let it be for 10 minutes unless it turns a little creamy.
  • To the above, add 2 and a half cups flour, eggs, buttermilk, 1/4th cup softened butter, baking powder, and some salt. Beat it thoroughly. After that, add 3 cups of flour, little by little to mix it well. Remember the dough needs to be soft and sticky!
  • After you're done with this, pour some flour over the surface and transfer the dough there. Knead it for about 8 minutes.
  • Split the dough into two equal parts. Roll each part into a rectangle that's about 12 inches long and 7 inches wide. Spread 1 tablespoon of softened butter over each rectangle.
  • Also, sprinkle 1/4 cup of sugar and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon evenly over the butter on each rectangle. Starting from one of the longer edges, roll up each rectangle tightly and pinch the edges.
  • You need to cut the rolled-up dough into 12 even slices.
  • Now let's come to the baking preparations. Coat pans with one-fourth cup of melted butter, one-fourth cup of brown sugar, 1/2 cup pecans, and 1/2 cup raisins.
  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F and transfer the slices in the pan and let it bake for about 30 minutes until it doubles in size.
