History of Sangria

Sangria is a Portuguese and Spanish term that translates to “bloodletting” and its origins goes back to the 18th century.

The roots of Sangria could be traced back to the Middle Ages in the Kingdom of León where another version was made using oranges, wine, sugar, lemons, and spices.

This beverage known as Leonese lemonade  was a popular cocktail, especially during the Holy Week in the León and the Castile region of Spain,

The modern sangria has been loved by people since the early 19th century and likely evolved from sangaree, a similar beverage that could be served hot or cold, originating in the Caribbean or West Indies.

Sangaree was introduced to mainland America, where it was popular during the American colonial era but largely disappeared by the early 20th century.

In the late 1940s, Hispanic Americans and Spanish restaurants reintroduced sangria to the U.S. as an iced drink. Its popularity surged after being showcased at the 1964 World's Fair in New York, establishing it as a staple in American culture.
