Pistachios were described in detail by ancient writers like Theophrastus and Dioscorides. They reached Italy around 35 AD, according to Pliny the Elder.
The cultivation of pistachios were being discussed in scriptures like Ibn al-'Awwam's *Book on Agriculture*
Legends say that pistachio trees were part of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon during King Marduk-apla-iddina II's reign around 700 BCE.
During the modern times, pistachios became a commercial crop in areas like Australia and the U.S. during the 19th century.
Although they were first planted in California in 1854, they did not gain any commercial importance till after 1929.
U.S. farmers expanded pistachio production by the 1970s due to favorable tax laws and reduced Iranian exports. The first major pistachio harvest in California occurred in 1976.
The 1979 Iranian Revolution and subsequent trade bans boosted U.S. pistachio farming, with the U.S. becoming a global competitor to Iran. By 2020, the two countries dominated the pistachio market, controlling 70% of global exports.
Today, Fresno County, California, leads U.S. pistachio production, contributing 40% of the crop’s value, which reached $722 million in 2021. Pistachios continue to be a prized crop worldwide.
