National No Bra Day

Next Monday, 13 October 2025

No Bra Day, observed annually on October 13th , plays a key role in supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It encourages women to go braless to promote breast cancer awareness and educate others about the importance of breast health.

This day stands to remind the importance of breast cancer awareness, early detection, and supporting those affected by the disease.

National No Bra Day became a platform to encourage women to forgo wearing a bra for a day, symbolizing solidarity with those affected by breast cancer and helping to spread awareness about the importance of early detection and ongoing support.

It is a reminder that the battle against breast cancer is far from over, and everyone should contribute to this cause, whether by spreading knowledge or supporting those impacted by the disease.

History of National No Bra Day

National No Bra Day has its roots in two events since 2011. The first occurred on 9th July, when Anastasia Doughnuts, using a pseudonym, launched the event to promote breast cancer awareness and created a website to amplify the message.

Later that year, on 19th October, Dr. Mitchell Brown in Toronto, Canada, established BRA Day (Breast Reconstruction Awareness), aimed at raising awareness about breast reconstruction options for women undergoing mastectomies.

In 2014, these two initiatives were combined and moved to 13th October, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, to enhance the focus on breast health, early detection, and self-examinations.

Breast Exams

The first step in detecting breast abnormalities is performing a monthly self-breast exam. The ideal time to do this is about ten days after the start of your menstrual cycle when hormonal changes are minimal. It's important to become familiar with the natural texture and feel of your breasts, even if they are lumpy.

Over time, you will learn to identify what is normal for you and notice any changes. Breast texture may shift throughout the month, so conducting the exam at the same time each month will help ensure accuracy. For those who do not menstruate, choosing a consistent day each month for the exam is key to maintaining breast health awareness.

How to Observe Bra Day

  • In addition to going braless, wear pink clothing or accessories to raise awareness and show solidarity with those affected.
