National LEGO Day honors the date in 1958 when the son of LEGO's founder, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, patented the modern LEGO brick design. These simple, interlocking plastic bricks revolutionized the toy industry, laying the foundation for the global success of LEGO.
Though this day was not established by the LEGO group, fans across the globe adopted January 28 as a time to honor the brand's influence on learning, innovation and play.
The History of LEGO Day
The history of LEGO goes back to Bilund, Denmark, when a carpenter named Ole Kirk Christiansen began making wooden toys during the Great Depression in 1932.
The company was named “LEGO” in 1934 which was derived from the Danish phrase “leg godt” translating to “play well”.
LEGO went ahead with innovation in 1947 by producing plastic toys, which marked a turning point in the toy industry.
The company also introduced “Automatic Binding Bricks” which were inspired by Kiddicraft Self-Locking Bricks that laid the foundation for the LEGO system.
These bricks were made from cellulose acetate and evolved from traditional stacking blocks. After his son, Godtfred patented the modern LEGO design with the interlocking capabilities, it created a different system of creative play that defined the brand.
Five years later, the bricks began using ABS plastic, known for its durability and vibrant colors.
In the decades that followed, LEGO expanded its range, with the Duplo line in 1969 for younger children and the iconic mini figures in 1978.
In the 1980s, LEGO became a household name worldwide, growing its presence through themed sets, partnerships, and educational programs.
The company continued to innovate, creating record-breaking models, such as the 2013 life-sized Star Wars X-Wing fighter built from over five million bricks.
By the 21st century, LEGO embraced adult fans with intricate sets, celebrated in shows like Lego Masters and The Lego Movie.
Today, LEGO remains a symbol of creativity and quality, inspiring generations with the motto: “Only the best is good enough.”
