Who Started National Hot Dog Day
National Hot Dog and Sausage Council was the organization that started National Hot Dog Day. It was back in 1991 when there was a hot dog lunch on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. Since then, National Hot Dog Day has been celebrated every July.
Why Is it Called Hot Dog
Yes, the name hot dogs originate from a dog breed called Dachshunds, also called sausage or wiener dogs. When the German immigrants arrived in USA, they brought their dachshunds along with them in the 1800s.
It is a common belief the word "hot dog" started as a joke referencing the dachshund's shape and the German sausages being sold by street vendors.
Alternate Theory
It was American etymologist Barry Popik who found the use of the term 'hot dog' in 1895 while going over issues of the Yale record.
At the time, it was a recurring joke that sausages were made from dog meat. This is why students started calling it hot dog. The joke was actually believed to be true by many and had a negative connotation.
