National Corn Dog Day
National Corn Dog Day is observed on the third Saturday of March every year to celebrate the delicious snack.
National Corn Dog Day began in 1992, thanks to Brady Sahnow and Henry Otley, two passionate fans of corn dogs and basketball
The first celebration took place in Corvallis, Oregon, as a small gathering of friends who enjoyed corn dogs while watching college basketball during the NCAA March Madness tournament.
What started as a casual event soon gained popularity, capturing the hearts of corn dog enthusiasts around the world.
By 2008, the celebration had grown to over 5,000 parties spread across five continents, even including one in Antarctica.
Today, National Corn Dog Day is a fun-filled tribute to this classic American snack and the spirit of community it inspires.
History of Corn Dog
German immigrants in Texas were skilled sausage makers, and they are said to have introduced the idea of corn dogs first in the United States.
Their traditional sausages were not that popular initially, but later they found a way to coat them in batter and deep-fry them.
Later, they came up with the idea of serving them on a stick.
A U.S. patent was filed in 1927 and granted in 1929 for a device that helps in dipping, cooking, and holding food on a stick.
The patent described how various foods, like wieners, ham, hard-boiled eggs, cheese, and fruits such as bananas and peaches could be dipped in batter made with self-rising flour and fried in oil.
The result was a tasty, easy-to-eat snack on a stick.
By 1926, a machine called the "Krusty Korn Dog" baker appeared in a restaurant supply catalog.
These early "korn dogs" were baked in corn batter and shaped to look like ears of corn when cooked.
Several vendors later claimed to have invented or made corn dogs popular. Carl and Neil Fletcher said they introduced their "Corny Dogs" at the State Fair of Texas between 1938 and 1942.
Pronto Pup, a business in Rockaway Beach, Oregon, said they invented the corn dog in 1939.
The Cozy Dog Drive-in in Springfield, Illinois, claimed to be the first to serve corn dogs on sticks on June 16, 1946.
The following year, Dave Barham opened 'Hot Dog on a Stick' in Santa Monica, California.
