History of Cakes
Cakes has a long history that dates back to the time when the word “cake” being derived from the Old Norse word “kaka”. The Vikings were the first one to introduce it.
In Ancient Greece, cakes were regarded as “plakous” which means flat, and they were made with eggs, flour, milk, nuts, and honey. They also had another cake named “satura” which was comparatively heavier.
During the Roman era, the cakes were known as “placenta” and the name came from the Greeks which was often baked with or on a pastry base.
The Greeks used beer to help cakes rise and fried fritters in olive oil, while cheesecakes made with goat’s milk were also common.
In ancient Rome, bread dough was sometimes enriched with butter, eggs, and honey to create a sweeter, cake-like treat, and the poet Ovid even mentioned cakes at his birthday party.
Early English cakes were much like bread, but they were round, flat, and flipped during baking.
By the Renaissance, sponge cakes, made with beaten eggs, likely appeared in Spain, shaping the modern idea of cake.
