World Religion Day
World Religion Day is observed on the third Sunday of January every year to emphasize the unity of all religions and the idea of progressive revelation.
This day was initiated by the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of the United States in 1950 and is now observed globally, including those outside the faith.
World Religion Day promotes harmony and unity among all religions, honoring the shared spiritual principles.
The Universal House of Justice in 1968 which is the governing body of the Bahá’í Faith, stated the purpose of World Religion Day clearly as a celebration of the need for a unified world religion. They also highlighted the importance of interfaith dialogue in addressing global challenges.
Origin of World Religion Day
World Religion Day was first observed in 1947 in Portland, Maine, under the theme “World Peace Through World Religion,” that featured a talk by Firuz Kazemzadeh.
The event started being observed in several U.S. communities by December 1949 and the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baháʼís of the United States standardized its date to January 15, 1950.
Other international countries soon began observing it with events in Australia during 1950 and Bolivia in 1951 with celebrations starting to spread across many countries by the late 1950s.
During the 1950s, and 1960s, World Religion Day gained significant recognition through radio broadcasts on AM Stations and speeches by prominent figures like actor O.Z. Whitehead, education Stanwood Cobb and diplomat Hilda Yen.
In the 1960s and 1970s, various cities across the United States and Canada issued proclamations honoring World Religion Day, including Reno, Nevada, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and Brandon, Manitoba. Missouri's governor also recognized the event in 1968.
Declarations from mayors and governors in cities across the U.S. and Canada also praised the day.
The event gained further prominence in 1985, when Sri Lanka issued the first World Religion Day stamp. This was followed by a stamp in the Republic of Congo in 2007, featuring religious symbols around a globe.
Modern observances now include interfaith panels, virtual events like those held in Second Life, and recognition by organizations such as the Parliament of the World's Religions. Today, World Religion Day continues to celebrate unity and foster dialogue among faiths worldwide.
