World Elder Abuse Awareness Day or WEAAD is observed every year on June 15th. The day was created with the intention of raising awareness about the increasing mistreatment and abuse of the elderly.
One of the main purposes of the day is to promote the dignity and well-being of older people.
The theme for WEAAD 2022 was Combatting Elder Abuse.
Elder abuse is an issue that needs a lot of attention and millions of older people across the globe are becoming to this.
As per the United Nations, one in every six older people are victims of abuses that can range from physical, sexual, mental, financial, and more.
Why World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Was Created
Many cases of elder abuse are not reported due to reasons like shame, fear, or a mere lack of awareness.
WEAAD is created to remind older individuals that they have the basic right to live comfortably, safely, and with dignity in society.
They don't have to tolerate any form of abuse, exploitation, neglect, or violence and can report misbehavior.
The backstory of this day goes back to the International Plan of Action on Aging that was sanctioned by the UN General Assembly in 1982.
This plan highlighted the significance of protecting senior citizens, and their rights and preventing abuse.
However, much wasn't paid attention till 2006, when the International Network For The Prevention of Elder Abuse announced June 15th as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
The first WEAAD was first acknowledged by the United Nations General Assembly on December 19th, 2011.
How To Observe World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
Ever since the formation of this, it has been observed by people, governments, and organizations around the world through different events, programs, campaigns, workshops, and more.
It also gives you a chance to outline the significance of respecting their privacy, rights and advocate for them.
WEAAD is an opportunity for everyone and governments across the world to create a world where things like elder abuse do not exist.
In order to make this a reality, we need to actively raise awareness and create a supportive environment for senior citizens.
To provide them with a sense of justice and freedom, governments and organizations should make certain resources accessible and provide support to victims including financial, legal, and mental support.
