Father's Day
Father's Day will be celebrated on June 15 in 2025. Every year on the third Sunday of June Father's Day is celebrated across the country. It is a day to celebrate fathers and the crucial role they play in people's lives, from childhood through to adulthood.
Father's Day is not a public holiday, but it falls on a Sunday, so businesses may be closed.
Father's Day Origins: A Daughter Who Started It All
Father's Day is believed to have originated from a service held at a West Virginia church on July 5, 1908.
The sermon honored fathers, particularly those who had lost their lives in the Monongah mine explosion. However, this was a one-time event with no intention of establishing an annual observance.
The modern concept of Father's Day is credited to Sonora Dodd, whose father, a widower, single-handedly raised her and her five siblings.
Inspired by the growing popularity of Mother's Day, Dodd felt that fathers deserved a similar day of recognition.
In 1910, she campaigned for Father's Day with the support of her local church, the YMCA, and the government.
She initially proposed June 5, her father’s birthday, but the third Sunday of June was ultimately chosen.
The first official Father's Day was celebrated in Washington on June 19, 1910.
Despite its initial establishment, Father's Day struggled to gain widespread recognition.
Dodd, occupied with her studies, could not continue her efforts, and the holiday faded from public attention.
In the 1930s, she revived the campaign with support from manufacturers of men’s products, such as ties, tobacco, and clothing. However, many viewed the holiday as a commercial ploy rather than a sincere tribute to fatherhood.
Several U.S. presidents, starting with Woodrow Wilson in 1916, attempted to make Father's Day a national holiday, but Congress repeatedly rejected the proposals.
In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued a proclamation officially recognizing the third Sunday of June as Father's Day. It wasn’t until 1972 that President Richard Nixon signed it into law, making it a permanent national holiday.
How to Celebrate Dads on Father's Day
Father's Day is the perfect occasion to commemorate fathers or any father figures in people's lives. Many people give their fathers cards or gifts or take them out to dinner. Those who live close to their dads pay them a visit and spend the day doing nice activities together.
Many families throw Father's Day parties with fathers, grandfathers, and uncles to honor the support they give their children.
Plan a day out
Spend time doing something fun you know your dad will love, such as going to a theme park, attending a sporting event, or going on a hike.
Cook Your Father Something Special
Fathers love food, so why not cook a special meal? and if you're not so handy in the kitchen, take him out to his favorite restaurant.
Gift Your Father Something Thoughtful
Show your appreciation for your father by giving him a gift that reflects his interests or hobbies. Or give him something heartfelt such as a memory book, or photo album.
Watch a film together
Spend quality time with your father watching a favorite movie, just be prepared for his cheesy taste!
Write a heartfelt letter
Give your father a letter that expresses your love and gratitude for all that he has done for you. Here are some to help you get started:
"Dad, thank you for all the quiet moments of support. The times you sat with me in silence, just being there, mean way more than words can say."
"Thank you for always believing in me dad. It has been my biggest strength."
"Dad, I think it is a good time to thank you for all the terrible jokes! They may not be funny, but they're a reminder of your love."
"This is not the school essay but you'll always be my hero no matter how old I am."
"For every sacrifice, every lesson learned, every tear wiped away, thank you, Dad. Your love has shaped me into the person I am today."
"Thank you for being my biggest cheerleader dad. I dedicate this day and all other days to you."
More than anything this is the perfect day to spend quality time with your father, showing him that you love him and think of him.
For all fathers, today is also the day to make time for your children and to reflect on the great gift of fatherhood.
School projects
Schools go a long way on Father's Day to make fathers feel special. School teachers will spend time crafting and creating inventive and fun gifts with their pupils in order that parents should have homemade gifts and cards to open.

Father's Day Customs
In some countries, such as Canada and America, there is a tradition of wearing a rose to honor your father on Father's Day. The rose is therefore the official flower of Father's Day. People often wear a white rose to symbolize their father being deceased, and a red one to honor their father if he is living.
