World Consumer Rights Day

Next Saturday, 15 March 2025

World Consumer Rights Day is observed every year on March 15.

This day is dedicated to raising awareness about consumer rights and educating people about fair, ethical, and transparent business practices.

The day also reminds us about the right to safety, choice, information, and fair treatment when purchasing something.

The History of World Consumer Day

The origins of World Consumer Rights Day goes back to March 15, 1962.

On this day, President John F. Kennedy addressed the U.S. Congress on the significance of consumer rights.

His speech served as the foundation for the consumer movement by emphasizing four essential rights.

  • Right to Safety: Protection from hazardous products and services.
  • Right to Information: Access to accurate details about goods and services.
  • Right to Choose: Availability of diverse and competitive products.
  • Right to Be Heard: Consumers' voices should influence policies and regulations.

Built on this foundation, a global advocacy group officially established World Consumer Rights Day in 1983 to promote stronger consumer protection worldwide.

Consumer Rights and Responsibilities

Consumer rights have expanded over the years and now the United Nations acknowledges eight fundamental

  • Right to Safety
  • Right to Information
  • Right to Choose
  • Right to Be Heard
  • Right to Redress

Although these rights are made to protect consumers, they come with responsibilities such being informed, taking ethical purchasing decisions, and reporting unethical business practices.
