Shani Jayanti is the birth anniversary of Shani Dev observed annually on Amavasya or the new moon day of Hindu month Jyestha.
Shani Dev is known for guiding Saturn and influencing karmic justice, therefore holding great significance for devotees seeking relief from hardships and negative planetary effects.
Lord Shani, the god of justice, ensures that everyone experiences the consequences of their actions.
Worshiping him on this day is believed to lessen the malefic effects of Saturn (Shani Dosha) while bringing prosperity, discipline, and stability.
Many devotees observe fasts and offer prayers, seeking his blessings for protection from misfortunes.
History
Shani Jayanti marks the birth of Lord Shani, the god of justice and karma. Born to Surya Dev and his shadow wife Chhaya, Shani was dark-complexioned due to his mother’s intense penance during pregnancy. Surya, doubting his son’s paternity, rejected him, which deeply hurt Shani. In his sorrow, Shani’s gaze dimmed his father’s brilliance, straining their relationship.
Blessed by Lord Shiva, Shani became the cosmic judge, ensuring people face the consequences of their actions. On this day, devotees worship him to reduce Saturn’s malefic effects, seek protection from hardships, and embrace discipline, justice, and prosperity.
Observing Shani Jayanti
On Shani Jayanti, devotees observe various rituals to seek Lord Shani’s blessings and reduce the malefic effects of Saturn.
Many observe a fast from sunrise to sunset, believing it cleanses sins and brings divine grace.
Special prayers and pujas are conducted, where devotees chant Shani mantras and offer black sesame seeds, mustard oil, and blue flowers to appease him.
Charity plays a significant role, as donating food, clothes, and money, especially black-colored items, is considered highly auspicious. '
Visiting temples dedicated to Lord Shani, such as the famous Shani Shingnapur in Maharashtra, is a common practice.
Since Lord Hanuman is believed to lessen Saturn’s adverse influence, many devotees also recite the Hanuman Chalisa for protection and spiritual strength.
