Lakshmi Puja
Lakshmi Puja will be performed on Friday, November 1 in 2024 . The puja muhurat or auspicious time to perform this puja is between 05:36 pm and 06:16 pm .
Worshiping Goddess Lakshmi is said to bring good wealth, fortune, beauty, prosperity and fertility. During Diwali, it is believed that she visits every home to bless her devotees which is why they perform this puja with a lot of devotion.
Why Goddess Lakshmi is Worshiped on Diwali
Diwali celebrates the arrival of Lord Rama, Sita and his brother Lakshman's arrival to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile so why is it that Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped on this day?
Once upon a time, there was a poor Brahmin who struggled to make ends meet. One day, a wise priest advised him to worship Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, to bring prosperity into his life. The Brahmin followed the priest's advice, and soon, his fortunes changed for the better.
This story reflects why people today worship Lakshmi during Diwali, especially in the Kaliyuga, the era we live in. In this age, where people desire wealth and success more than anything, praying to Lakshmi makes perfect sense.
There's another fascinating legend behind this. Diwali falls during a time when Lord Vishnu, Lakshmi's husband, is believed to be asleep. Vishnu sleeps from Shayani Ekadashi (in Ashadh) to Prabodhini Ekadashi (in Kartik), right around Diwali. Since Vishnu is resting, it's Lakshmi who takes center stage, blessing people with prosperity during this festive season.
Lakshmi Puja Rituals
Houses are cleaned and decorated with lamps and diyas since it is performed on Diwali or the festival of lights. Beautiful rangolis are also drawn.
Just like the house, the devotees also need to take a bath to cleanse themselves before Lakshmi puja.
A Kalash or pot filled with water, a betel nut, a flower, a coin and some rice grains is placed on a red cloth on a raised platform. Five mango leaves are also placed on the mouth of the Kalash.
The idol or picture of Goddess Lakshmi, along with Lord Ganesha, is placed in the center of the puja area. Fruits and sweets are offered as devotees recite mantras to invoke the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi.
