Jagaddhatri Puja
Jagaddhatri puja will be performed on November 10 in 2024 . It is an important occasion in West Bengal that arrives a month after the much awaited Durga Puja because Goddess Jagaddhatri is also another form of Maa Durga.
Jagaddhatri puja falls on the Shukla paksha in the month of Kartik . Jagadhatri maa has four hands each carrying a different weapon- a bow, arrow, discus and conch.
Although the main puja will be celebrated on November 10, it is observed for 5 five days from 8 November to 11 November .
Significance of Jagaddhatri Puja: Why is Maa Jagadhatri Worshiped
The name "Jagaddhatri" means the one who holds the world. She is regarded as a nurturer and guardian who maintains cosmic order. Jagaddhatri puja is celebrated grandly, particularly in the Hooghly district and the town of Chandannagar.
Like Durga, she is depicted as slaying the demon Mahishasura, symbolizing her role in defeating ignorance, ego, and chaos to restore harmony in the universe.
“Jagaddhatri arises in the heart of a person who can control the frantic elephant called mind.”
-Sri Ramakrishna
Devotees worship Maa Jagaddhatri to receive her blessings for protection, peace, removal of ego and ignorance, and prosperity.
History of Jagaddhatri Puja
The Hindu mythological story behind the creation of Maa Jagaddhatri is quite interesting. After Maa Durga emerged victorious after killing Mahishasura, the gods became arrogant thinking that it was their slow power and weapons which marked her victory.
Lord Brahma came up with a test for eliminating this arrogance. He asked the gods to try and destroy a blade of grass. However, despite their conviction, the God of Fire (Agni) and the God of Air (Vayu) were unable to do so.
Thus, they finally came to the realization that all their strength and power stemmed from 'Shakti', the supreme Goddess, who as Jagadhatri holds the universe together and is the ultimate source of all creation and sustainability.
Jagaddhatri Puja Celebration
Similar to Durga puja, Jagaddhatri puja spans five days beginning from Soshti, Saptami, Ashtami, and Navami to Dashami.
Jagaddhatri Puja in Chandannagar is celebrated with grand idols, dazzling light displays, and vibrant community gatherings, making it one of Bengal's most iconic festivals. Known for its unique 3D lighting, the city comes alive as artisans showcase intricate designs that attract visitors from far and wide.
Families, communities, and visitors join in the festive spirit with rituals, processions, and traditional fairs. The celebrations end with a grand immersion procession, accompanied by music and dance. This festival not only unites the community but also boosts the local economy and highlights Chandannagar's rich cultural heritage.
