International Sudoku Day

Next Tuesday, 9 September 2025

September 9th marks International Sudoku Day which celebrates the popular and engaging number-solving puzzle, Sudoku.

On this day, we want to encourage enthusiasts and newcomers to play, learn, and take full advantage of this stimulating game.

Sudoku features a 9×9 grid divided into 3×3 subgrids, where the goal is to fill each row, column, and subgrid with numbers 1 through 9 without repeating any number. Pre-filled cells provide clues, and the fewer the initial numbers, the more challenging the puzzle.

Origin of International Sudoku Day

International Sudoku Day has been celebrated annually since its inception on September 9, 2013, to highlight the game's global appeal. The World Puzzle Federation chose September 9th to symbolize the 9×9 grid that defines Sudoku.

History of Sudoku

Sudoku's origins traces back to 1783 when Leonhard Euler, a Swiss mathematician introduced “Latin Squares”. It was a project that involved the arrangement of numbers in a grid.

Howard Garns, adapted Euler's concept into the modern game that we now know as Sudoku. It gained huge popularity in 1986 when the Japanese puzzle company Nikoli published it as “Sudoku” that translates to single number in Japanese.

Earlier predecessors of Sudoku appeared in the late 19th century when French puzzle setters experimented with removing numbers from magic squares.

In 1892, the Paris daily Le Siècle published a partially completed 9×9 magic square, followed by a refined version by La France in 1895, named “carré magique diabolique.”

Sudoku's popularity took off across the globe in 1997 when Wayne Gould, a judge from Hong Kong developed a computer program to produce creative puzzles.

The Times in Britain launched Sudoku on November 12, 2004, and it soon became a recurring feature in newspapers across the world.

The first live TV Sudoku show, Sudoku Live, aired in 2005, and the BBC's SUDO-Q combined Sudoku with general knowledge in a game show format.

Sudoku has since become a popular feature on PCs, websites, mobile phones, and video game consoles, with notable implementations in games like Brain Age.

Its popularity continues to grow, with Sudoku puzzles appearing in various forms and platforms globally.
