Apara Ekadashi, is a significant Hindu festival that is observed on the eleventh day or Ekadashi of the waning phase of the moon or the Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Jyestha.

This holy occasion holds a deeper spiritual significance and is said to bring immense blessings to those who observe it with devotion and sincerity.

Apara Ekadashi is a sacred observance associated with cleansing one’s sins and attaining spiritual merit.

According to Hindu scriptures, fasting on this day helps wash away past misdeeds and paves the path to moksha (liberation).

Also known as ‘Achala Ekadashi,’ it symbolizes unwavering faith and steadfast devotion.

The day is particularly recommended for those who seek forgiveness for their wrongdoings and wish to attain divine grace.

Legends suggest that those who observe Apara Ekadashi sincerely are blessed with wealth, prosperity, and a fulfilling life.

The Story of Apara Ekadashi

The story of Apara Ekadashi is associated with the legend of a king named Mahidhwaj, who was unjustly killed by his brother and became a wandering spirit.

Lord Vishnu, pleased by a devotee’s prayers, liberated the king’s soul on Apara Ekadashi, granting him salvation.

This story signifies the power of this Ekadashi in granting liberation and erasing sins.

Another legend states that those who observe this fast with devotion receive blessings equivalent to performing sacred rituals like donating cows, feeding the needy, and taking holy dips in rivers like the Ganges.

Observing Apara Ekadashi

Devotees observe a strict fast on this day, refraining from consuming grains, pulses, and certain vegetables.

Some follow a complete fast with only water, while others eat fruits and milk. Worship of Lord Vishnu is a central part of the observance, with devotees offering prayers, reciting Vishnu Sahasranama, and chanting devotional hymns dedicated to Him.

Acts of charity and donations are also considered highly auspicious, with many people giving alms, donating food, and helping the less fortunate.

Additionally, a night vigil is observed by many devotees, who stay awake throughout the night, singing bhajans and meditating on Lord Vishnu.
