Apara Ekadashi

The Story of Apara Ekadashi

The story of Apara Ekadashi is associated with the legend of a king named Mahidhwaj, who was unjustly killed by his brother and became a wandering spirit.

Lord Vishnu, pleased by a devotee’s prayers, liberated the king’s soul on Apara Ekadashi, granting him salvation.

This story signifies the power of this Ekadashi in granting liberation and erasing sins.

Another legend states that those who observe this fast with devotion receive blessings equivalent to performing sacred rituals like donating cows, feeding the needy, and taking holy dips in rivers like the Ganges.

Observing Apara Ekadashi

Devotees observe a strict fast on this day, refraining from consuming grains, pulses, and certain vegetables.

Some follow a complete fast with only water, while others eat fruits and milk. Worship of Lord Vishnu is a central part of the observance, with devotees offering prayers, reciting Vishnu Sahasranama, and chanting devotional hymns dedicated to Him.
