National Pizza Party Day

Next Friday, 16 May 2025

National Pizza Party Day is observed on the third Friday of May to celebrated one of the most favorite foods of people across the globe.

While the exact origins of Pizza Party Day remain unclear, the tradition of celebrating with pizza has been around for decades

This day is dedicated to gather with family, friends, and colleagues to devour the delicious slices of the saucy, cheesy, goodness.

Whether homemade, store-bought, or ordered from a favorite pizzeria, Pizza Party Day is the perfect excuse to indulge in this universally loved dish.

History of Pizza

Persian soldiers cooked flatbreads with cheese and dates on their shields, in the 6th century BC.

The ancient Greeks consumed flatbread with herbs, cheese, and oil. There's also a story in Roman mythology, in the Aeneid, where Aeneas and his men accidentally eat something that seems like pizza.

In 2023, archaeologists found a fresco in Pompeii showing a dish that looks like pizza, which might be an early version of it.

The first time the word "pizza" was written down was in 997 CE in Italy, where people had to give pizzas as part of a payment.

The pizza we know today started in Naples, Italy, in the 1700s or early 1800s.

At first, it was a simple street food with toppings like garlic, salt, and cheese. Tomatoes were added later after they arrived in Europe from the Americas.

By 1830, the first pizzerias with tables for customers had opened.

Pizza came to the United States in the late 1800s with Italian immigrants. The first American pizzeria, Lombardi's, opened in New York City in 1905.

As Italians moved across the country, pizza became more popular and spread around the world.

To keep the tradition alive, a group called the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana was created in 1984 to promote real Neapolitan pizza.

In 2009, Neapolitan pizza became a protected dish in the European Union, and in 2017, UNESCO recognized the skill of making it as part of world heritage.
