National Pig Day

Next Saturday, 1 March 2025

Every year on March 1, National Pig Day is observed which is a fun and wholesome tribute to one of the most misunderstood and smartest animals.

Whether you enjoy their innocence, admire their playful personalities, or cherish their role in agriculture, this day reminds us to show some love to them

National Pig Day was founded in 1972 by sisters Ellen Stanley, a teacher from Texas, and Mary Lynne Rave from North Carolina.

They created this day to honor pigs as highly intelligent and domesticated animals, aiming to give them the recognition they deserve but often do not receive.

A Brief History of Pigs

It is said that pigs have been a huge part of human history for over thousands of years having been first domesticated around 9000 years ago in the Near East and Asia.

Over the years, pigs spread to different parts of the globe as human trades and migrations increased.

During the Columbian Exchange in the 16th century, the Spanish brought pigs to new lands, including the Chiloé Archipelago and southeastern North America.

In Chiloé, pigs thrived by feeding on shellfish and algae. Some pigs in North America escaped and became wild, or feral.

Feral pigs have since spread widely and caused problems in many areas. They damage crops, harm the environment, and spread diseases. In some regions, such as New Zealand and South America, feral pigs have become a major issue for both agriculture and wildlife.

How to Celebrate National Pig Day

Celebrate by visiting a nearby farm or zoo to explore engaging pig exhibits and attend educational talks.

You could also throw a pig-inspired party with pink decorations, pig-shaped snacks, and exciting trivia to enjoy with loved ones.

To make the day more impactful, support pig welfare groups that advocate for better living conditions and sustainable farming.

Take time to discover fascinating facts about pigs’ importance in agriculture, culture, and history, or unleash your creativity with pig-themed crafts like making piggy banks or drawing pig characters.
