The Background of Croissant

Even though Croissants are staples in French cuisine, they have Austrian roots.

During the 17th century, a kipferl, crescent-shaped pastry, was popular in Austria. According o popular stories, the shape of the pastry commemorated Austria’s victory over the Ottoman Empire during the Battle of Vienna in 1683.

When Austrian baker August Zang opened a bakery in Paris in the 1830s, he introduced the French to his version of the kipferl.

The French soon adopted the pastry, adding their own twist with buttery, laminated dough to create the version we now know as the croissant.

Types of Croissant

  • Classic Butter Croissant: Flaky and golden, the traditional croissant is perfect on its own.
  • Chocolate Croissant (Pain au Chocolat): A sweet version filled with rich chocolate.
  • Almond Croissant: Made with almond paste and sometimes topped with sliced almonds.
  • Ham and Cheese Croissant: A savory twist, often enjoyed for breakfast or lunch.
