History of Chocolate Chips
Chocolate chips were invented when Ruth Graves Wakefield, who ran the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts, added chopped up pieces of a semi-sweet Nestlé chocolate bar to her cookie dough.
She was trying to make a batch of chocolate cookies and decided to chop up a Nestlé chocolate bar, expecting it to melt evenly into the dough. Instead, the small chunks held their shape, creating the first-ever chocolate chip cookies.
The cookies became incredibly popular, leading Wakefield to strike a deal with Nestlé in 1939.
In exchange for allowing Nestlé to print her recipe on their chocolate bar packaging, she received a lifetime supply of chocolate.
Initially, Nestlé sold their chocolate bars with a tiny chopping tool, but by 1941, they produced ready-made chocolate chips and made baking an easier process.
