Clean Up Australia Day

Next Sunday, 2 March 2025

Every year on the first Sunday of March Australians come together to roll up their sleeves and make a significant difference on Clean Up Australia Day.

This annual event inspires individuals, communities, and organisations to clean up local parks, beaches, streets, waterways, and beaches.

It’s a day dedicated to creating a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Australia.

Origins of Clean Up Australia Day

The origin of Clean Up Australia Day goes back to 1990 when Ian Kierman, an Australian sailor and environmentalist took the initiative.

Ian took part in a yacht race and the experience going around the world opened his eyes to the excessive amount of pollution in oceans and coastal areas.

He was determined to make a difference so he organised a community clean-up in Sydney Harbour in 1989.

The success of this event inspired the establishment of a national day, which has since become an iconic environmental movement.

The Motive of the Day

The main intent of Clean Up Australia Day is to eradicate waste and litter in public spaces and by encouraging volunteers to eradicate rubbish, the event helps is raising awareness about the significance of proper waste management and sustainable living.

It reminds us of the impact small actions when done collectively, and it can lead to environmental improvements.

How to Participate in Clean Up Australia Day

Participating in Clean Up Australia Day is easy and open to everyone.

Volunteers can register their own clean-up site or join an existing group, with schools, businesses, and community organisations often organising group efforts.

To get started, participants are encouraged to bring supplies such as gloves, rubbish bags, and any tools needed for safe and efficient clean-up, though many sites also provide kits to help volunteers.

On the day, the focus is on collecting general waste, recyclables, and hazardous materials to reduce environmental damage and improve local areas.

Beyond the clean-up, this event inspires people to address broader environmental issues like recycling, waste reduction, and sustainable living.

Together, these efforts contribute to a healthier, greener future for Australia.
